Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) February 17, 2012
Samueli Institute, a recognized leader in integrative medicine research, has released the results of a blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) that finds ?biofield healing therapies? reduce fatigue and increase cortisol variability (a biological marker that has been linked to fatigue and depression) in breast cancer survivors. The full results of the study entitled, ?Complementary Medicine for Fatigue and Cortisol Variability in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial,? was recently published in the February 1, 2012 issue of the journal Cancer, a peer-reviewed Interdisciplinary International Journal of the American Cancer Society. A link to the abstract for the study can be found on the publisher?s website (http://www.wiley.com).
Dr. Shamini Jain, Senior Scientist and Program Manager at Samueli Institute and Assistant Professor at University of California San Diego, was the Principal Investigator of the study. Funded by the National Institute of Health/National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine as well as Samueli Institute, the study was conducted at the University of California San Diego.
?Approximately one-third of cancer patients experience significant fatigue up to ten years or more after treatment,? said Dr. Jain. ?Even worse, fatigue is often associated with additional problems such as depression and sleep disturbance, interfering with patients? daily lives. Many times, these patients are too tired to even engage in basic self-care practices like exercise. Unfortunately, there are no gold-standard treatments for treating this persistent fatigue, which is why we wanted to investigate whether biofield healing could offer hope to fatigued cancer survivors as a non-invasive, complementary treatment.?
Biofield therapies, also often referred to as ?hands-on-healing,? include techniques such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Healing Touch. These therapies are thought to work by affecting energy fields that surround and penetrate the human body. A previously published systematic review conducted by Dr. Jain and colleague Dr. Paul Mills of University of California San Diego suggested that biofield therapies are useful in reducing acute pain in a number of populations.
?The take-home message is that there is hope for reducing cancer-related fatigue for these survivors,? noted Dr. Jain. ?These and other related therapies can be used as complementary care for cancer patients and survivors. If further larger-scale studies confirm these results, it suggests that these therapies may be very useful to integrate into standard care for cancer patients to reduce and possibly prevent these negative symptoms.?
Along with Dr. Jain, co-authors of the study include Dr. Paul Mills, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego; Dr. John Ives, Director, Brain, Mind and Healing Program at Samueli Institute; Dr. Ian Coulter, Samueli Institute Chair in Policy for Integrative Medicine at RAND Corporation; and Dr. Wayne Jonas, President and CEO, Samueli Institute.
For further information on details of this rigorously designed study, please contact Samueli Institute at http://www.SamueliInstitute.org.

From her site princessteagan.com Our sweet little princess Teagan Grace Haniszewski came bursting into the world August 4, 2005 with a head full of curly dark hair and hazel eyes. She has been a continual joy and blessing to mom and dad, Carly & Bryant. She loves ballet and gymnastics (she calls it nastics) and playing outside at her water table. Teagan is a very happy girl who loves to laugh, and always answers with a please or thank you. In May of 2007, Teagan began having some intermittent vomiting and had trouble walking and standing up. We took her to the pediatrician on Friday June 1st for an 11:45 appointment. After hearing Teags symptoms the doctor sent us to Good Shepherd Hospital for a CT scan at 2:30 that revealed a large brain tumor in the back of her head. The doctor sent us immediately to Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago where we were admitted through the Emergency Room. After we arrived, the battery of tests and the reality of a world turned upside down began. A few hours later, Teagan was taken to the third floor of the hospital where they began to monitor her and prepare her for further testing. In the next 2 days, the neurosurgeons checked the CT scans and the MRI and planned to perform brain surgery on Monday. Prayers were answered as the MRI on the spine showed no evidence of tumor growth there. At about 2pm on Monday, June 4th, Teagan went into surgery and came out at about 10pm. After the surgery, Teagans neurosurgeon, Dr. Alden, told us that …

The Heart Link Network, women networking with 200 locations in U.S., Canada, and Australia launches a new women networking location in Scottsdale, Arizona that will work in alliance with the Bridging the Gap Between Breast Cancer and Beauty Foundation, founded by Rachell Hall.
The Rachell Hall Breasthetics Clinic they aids women as they go thru the final reconstructive procedure of Breasthetics. “We are dedicated to women and understand they are concerned greatly about the exterior beauty of the breast after reconstruction. Women want to look and feel beautiful again after their arduous battle with breast cancer. We not only restore the beauty of the breast, we give hope to women who really need it,? states Rachell Hall.
?Complete Breasthetic recovery for every woman is our goal, as well as, our expertise at The Breasthetics Institute of America?. ?Breasthetics? is defined as the unity of science, technique, and aesthetics in restoring the natural appearance of the breast after mastectomy surgery by completing the reconstruction process with nipple/areola cosmeceutical dermal pigmentation,? explains Hall.
?As the founder of The Heart Link Women?s Network, serving, educating and inspiring thousands of women each month, I understand that women need more complete information and assurance when they are diagnosed and frightened. As the daughter of a mother who lost her breast, I understand all too well what it means to have a completed reconstruction so that a woman doesn?t feel deformed,? stated Dawn Billings, founder of The Heart Link Women’s Network. “We are thrilled to open this new women’s location in Scottsdale, Arizona to continue our mission to encourage and inspire all women, we are excited that we can now, also raise awareness of Bridging the Gap’s wonderful mission and help women receive services that can help them feel whole and beautiful again.”
